Cost of Choosing Animal Products: Depletion of Mother Earth

- PLANET EARTH:OUR LOVING HOME The True Cost of Choosing Animal Products: Depletion of Mother Earth. Episode: 1875, Air Date: 2 November 2011.

Greetings, green-minded viewers, to this week's episode of Planet Earth: Our Loving Home featuring an interview with Dr. Richard Oppenlander, a vegan, on how animal agriculture is destroying our planet.

Dr. Oppenlander is an American environmentalist, wellness advocate and dentist who over the last four decades has studied the effects of food choices on the environment and human health. He is also the president and founder of an organic vegan food production and education business as well as the co-founder of an animal rescue and sanctuary.

His research findings show that animal product production and consumption is severely harming our well-being and decimating our world by causing the substantial global loss of land, freshwater, clean air, food supply, biodiversity and energy resources at a frighteningly rapid pace. As the author of "Comfortably Unaware: Global depletion and food responsibility... What you choose to eat is killing our planet," he has appeared on radio shows and written articles for newspapers and magazines to raise awareness of conscious eating.

We're losing our global resources at an unprecedented rate. We are producing 70-billion or more animals each year and it's growing in exponential fashion. That number is a bit difficult to pin down, because on any given day, there will be, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 1.7-trillion chickens in the world and one- to two-trillion fish in the world that are on their way sooner or later to slaughter. So, it's a massive number and all of our resources are being deployed for this purpose.

So in the other direction, we're using all these resources and all of our energies to produce essentially food to create animals. It's really not even food, it's animals that we're creating. And then we're eating those and the end result is we're eating something that's unhealthy for us too. So it's sort of a two-bladed sword that we're dealing with right now. If we just did away with all that unnecessary loss of resources, it would obviously be better for our health.

Meat production is inherently inefficient compared to growing plants for food. Vast tracts of tropical rainforests are destroyed annually to create space for livestock grazing and cultivating crops for livestock feed.

According to a United Nations Environment Programme report, animal agriculture-related activities take up 38% of our planet's land. Producing animal products also consumes huge volumes of water. For example a person uses up to 15,000 liters of water per day for a meat-based diet, which is 15-times as much water as a vegan would use.

Water itself is the largest concern of any scientist that is studying where we're going in our future. We are running out of land, of course, but we're expected to deplete our water systems by 40% in just the next 19 years. So if we didn't use the water for all of the aspects of animal agriculture, we certainly could be applying it more frugally to our own use right now. They're concerned about water scarcity, when in reality, it's more about water management.

Instead of technologies, we need to start looking at choices. Instead of choosing to eat animal products, which uses massive amounts of water, we could be using water just to sustain ourselves. If you use your acre to grow grass-fed livestock, one acre isn't normally enough. You would need 5, 10 even up to 20 acres in most land in the world.

And when you do that, after two and a half years, which is what it would take to grow one grass- fed cow, you would essentially end up with about 480 pounds of that type of animal product that people are calling food. In the course of that 2 ½ years, you would create or produce about three to four tons of methane and carbon dioxide. And you would also use minimally 20- to 30,000 gallons of water.

Minimally, that's what they would drink. But in most cases, they would use about a million to two-million gallons of water because of all the alfalfa or other aspects of water use that they would need to use to even irrigate the land to produce grasses for them to eat.

Whereas if you use that same acre of land to produce something like a kale-and-quinoa combination, you would have the equivalent on average after 2 ½ years of about 15,000 pounds of food produced. If you slithered off 1/8 of an acre, and you threw in some hydroponics, you could grow about 30,000 pounds of tomatoes during that 2 ½-year period of time. And you'd end up with food that's infinitely healthier for you to eat and for our planet to grow versus animal products.

The value of biodiversity is inestimable. Globally, a wide range of plant species keep nature in balance, feed the world's population and improve the quality

STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY The Captive Dolphin

- STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY The Utter Despair Behind the Captive Dolphin's Smile. Episode: 1874, Air Date: 1 November 2011.

The images in the following program are highly sensitive and may be as disturbing to viewers as they were to us. However, we have to show the truth about cruelty to animals, praying that you will help to stop it.

Conscientious viewers, this is the Stop Animal Cruelty series on Supreme Master Television. Today we will hear from prominent dolphin advocate and director of SaveJapanDolphins.org Mr. Richard (Ric) O'Barry who is also known for his role in the Academy Award-winning documentary "The Cove." The film exposes the sheer terror encountered by the approximately 20,000 dolphins that are annually trapped in a cove and then murdered for meat in Taiji, Japan. Some of the captured dolphins however are kept alive and sold to aquariums, zoos and so-called amusement parks.

Ric O'Barry was once a dolphin trainer for the popular American TV show "Flipper," however he had a change of heart when he saw the terrible emotional and physical toll that life in captivity has on these sensitive and intelligent beings. Dolphins have a very large cerebral cortex and an associational neocortex of significant size. They have an impressive cognitive capacity. Scientific studies have shown them to be self-aware and very social beings.

Dr. Louis M. Herman, a faculty member of the Department of Oceanography at the University of Hawaii, USA describes dolphins as our "cognitive cousins" to highlight the fact that Bottlenose dolphins' level of reasoning is the same as that of humans and the great apes.

The enormous stress of being chased and herded into a small cove is more than these beings can bear; they are so terrified that some will die of shock and pregnant females may spontaneously abort their fetuses. The dolphins that do escape become extremely upset upon seeing their pod, or family members, captured and in distress and sometimes instead of fleeing in fear, will stay to try and release or simply comfort their loved ones.

And much like in The Cove, in The Cove you see them putting a long pole in the water and then they hit it with a hammer, and it creates a wall of sound. And that drives the dolphins in. It terrorizes them. They do the same thing in the Solomon Islands, except they use very small canoes, and they have a hand-carved paddle. It's a solid, solid tree trunk. And they go out and they have two river stones, very dense stones. When they find the dolphins, they bang them together and that drives them into the cove, just like in Taiji, and they're slaughtered. Some are captured.

Mr. O'Barry came to Singapore in early October 2011 to try and convince a local resort constructing an aquarium to free 25 Bottlenose dolphins they purchased to put on display. These cetaceans were caught in the waters off the Solomon Islands, a nation in the South Pacific, which is a big source of dolphins for the aquarium and zoo industries.

Well, there are 25 right now there that are going to China. But there are not that many dolphins there and they keep taking more and more. They took 25 to another casino resort in Dubai. There was about 80 that went to Mexico to a dolphin abusement park. There were 25 that went to the Philippines that are scheduled to come here (Singapore) and now there are 25 more that they want to sell them to China. All of them captured violently, a lot of them died in the process.

Dolphins are very family orientated mammals. The females are particularly close and will spend their whole life with their mother and sisters in a family pod. So capturing even one dolphin from a pod is grievous and is the human equivalent of kidnapping. Imagine your child being snatched away and sold into slavery to perform for the amusement of others; that is exactly what happens when a dolphin is taken from the ocean and sent to an aquarium. The abduction of one dolphin causes untold mental anguish to the entire pod.

After being taken captive, the dolphins are transported for sale. With little or no veterinary supervision, and under extremely cruel conditions, the dolphins are taken by truck while carried on stretchers. Being confined to the vehicle, out of water and away from family is very disturbing and damaging to the animal. Improper handling sometimes causes injury or death to the dolphins as does a lack of hydration.

Furthermore, dolphins are very heavy and need the buoyancy of water to protect their bodies. When they are out of water, the full weight of their body pushes down on their internal organs which may rupture or get squashed thus causing massive internal bleeding and trauma resulting in death. On arrival at the aquarium, they are kept in a small containment tank.

Being restricted to a tiny pool away from home is more than most dolphins can handle. In fact, 53% of captured dolphins die within 90 days of being sto

Growth Hormones in Animal Products Equals Cancer

- HEALTHY LIVING George Eisman: Growth Hormones in Animal Products Equals Cancer. Episode: 1873, Air Date: 31 October 2011.

Halo, thoughtful viewers, and welcome to Healthy Living. On this week's program George Eisman, a highly respected vegan registered dietitian in the United States, will explain how consuming animal products causes cancer as well as how the animal agriculture industry destroys public health.

Our diet benefits from lowering our animal products. Every serving we get out, we lower our cancer risk by 20 to 30%, right down to no animal products at all.

Mr. Eisman served as a faculty member in dietetics and nutrition at several universities and colleges and has worked in a children's hospital and a nursing home, as well as for public health agencies in four states. He founded The Association of Vegetarian Dietitians and Nutrition Educators, is the co-founder and first Chairman-Elect of the Vegetarian Nutrition Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association, is the director of the Coalition for Cancer Prevention Through Plant-Based Eating and is also an Advisory Board Member of EarthSave International. Mr. Eisman is the author of two books, "The Most Noble Diet" and "A Basic Course in Vegetarian and Vegan Nutrition."

I've been vegetarian for over 40 years now. And I've been vegan for about 28 years. And my life's work is trying to make people aware of the connection between what they eat and their risk of diseases like cancer. And a vegan diet is by far the best way to lower your cancer risk.

There was a study done in Japan a few years ago that found when people in rural areas went from eating animal products just once a week to three times a week, the breast cancer rate went up by 70%. If you can find a drug that would lower people's breast cancer rate by 70%, you could make a billion dollars. So all you have to do is get them to cut animal products out of their diet and it goes down by that much.

There were an estimated 12.7 million cancer cases diagnosed around the world in 2008, and this number is expected to rise to 21 million by 2030. Cancer is a term used for more than 100 diseases and is characterized by out-of-control cell reproduction.

To be healthy, the body needs a constant supply of new cells and their regulation is an orderly path of growth, division, and death. When this process is damaged, some cells do not end their lives as a normal part of the cell life cycle. These irregular ones grow uncontrollably and divide, forming a mass of abnormal cells. The complex mechanism of cell regulation is tightly controlled by growth hormones.

The best thing about a vegan diet, from a standpoint of cancer risk is that a vegan diet contains no growth hormones. Growth hormones are proteins that promote growth. And cancer is a disease of abnormal growth. So to put growth hormones in your body, when you're trying to fight cancer or prevent cancer, is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. It's just going to make it worse, because it's going to promote growth.

And growth hormones are animal products, because all the animals that are slaughtered for us are killed when they're still fairly young, so they're still growing. And of course, dairy products are meant to grow a baby calf into a thousand pound cow in a year, so they're full of growth hormones. And eggs are full of growth hormones. So in order to get these growth hormones out of our diet, we have to go to a plant-based diet, and use plant-based milks and egg-substitutes made from plant foods, and of course, things like veggie burgers and tofu and other plant products in place of meat and other animal products.

Organic meats and grass-fed, non-hormone enhanced meats, still are full of growth hormones, because of the age of the animals. We don't let them get old before we slaughter them, we eat them when they're still young. So these growth hormones are in their bodies, whether they're enhanced, injected with them, or they're just naturally there. Those growth hormones are in our animal products that we consume. These growth hormones are proteins; they're not fats. So if you eat low-fat meat and low-fat dairy products, it's actually worse because they have more protein than they do fats, so they have more growth hormone.

Mr. Eisman learned about how dietary growth hormones cause cancer from the work of Professor Jane Plant, a cancer victim herself whose tumor went into remission shortly after she adopted a vegan diet.

I came across this book in 1999 called "The No Dairy Breast Cancer Prevention Program" by a woman named Jane Plant, who was one of the top scientists in England. And this book opened up my eyes to the link between cancer and dairy products, and as well as all other animal products. So dairy products are the one food that people think is healthy for them, and it really isn't. It's just as unhealthy as meat and chicken and eg

Oxfam International: A Confederation of Humanitarians

- GOOD PEOPLE GOOD WORKS Oxfam International: A Confederation of Humanitarians. Episode: 1872, Air Date: 30 October 2011.

Greetings, considerate viewers, and welcome to Good People, Good Works on Supreme Master Television. This week's program features Oxfam International, a global charitable alliance of 15 non-profit organizations working in 98 countries that conducts emergency and long-term projects to aid the disadvantaged and enhance social justice.

The name "Oxfam" stems from the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, a non-governmental group formed in 1942 by social activists and academics in Oxford, UK, whose objective was to relieve famine in Greece during wartime. Oxfam's operations and missions can generally be categorized into three areas: long-term sustainable development projects, advocacy campaigns on important issues and humanitarian relief work.

Development Projects

The development projects, which are the heart of Oxfam's work, find innovative, lasting ways to improve the lives of those in need. One of the organization's success stories involves the introduction of a new cultivating technique that improves crop yields, called the System of Rice Intensification or SRI, in the African Sahel, Southeast Asia and India. In Âu Lạc (Vietnam), for example, Oxfam has been working with local partners to help small-scale rice farmers mitigate climate change and enhance food security through SRI farming methods.

Advocacy Campaigns

One of the most powerful, effective Oxfam initiatives is its Celebrity Ambassador project. Through the support of many public figures and international celebrities, Oxfam has helped better lives in developing nations around the world. Renowned English TV and radio personality Zoe Ball, the first ever female host of the BBC Radio1 breakfast show, is a celebrity ambassador for Oxfam Great Britain.

In 2009, when Ms. Ball was expecting her second child, she and 20 other pregnant women joined a campaign begun by Oxfam and other partners, such as Save The Children, Action Aid, the Trades Union Congress and Unison to urge the British government to provide free healthcare services to vulnerable women and children in developing countries. The campaign was highly successful as then Prime Minister of Great Britain, His Excellency Gordon Brown, announced that the UK, along with other nations, would fund free healthcare services in six developing nations, including Sierra Leone.

According to 2008 statistics, only 10% of births in this West African nation took place in a clinic or hospital. In the first month of the program's implementation, the number of patients treated in prenatal clinics in Sierra Leone's capital Freetown increased by seven-fold and 179% more children were being seen in health centers.

Oxfam's Press Officer, Sarah Dransfield, who also worked on the project, met a young Sierra Leonean mother who benefited from the charity care. The 19 year old named Marian, whose delivery was paid for by the program, said of her newborn baby, "He is a sign of great hope for my country."

Humanitarian Relief Work

As natural disasters and other crises continue to cause widespread suffering around the world, Oxfam is dedicating a large portion of its resources to assisting people affected by these catastrophes, especially climate refugees, by supporting search and rescue operations and providing food, clean water, sanitation and shelter.

Since July 2010, Oxfam International and its partners have helped 2.4-million people affected by floods in Pakistan. The group is also currently responding to humanitarian emergencies in Palestine, Afghanistan, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Liberia, Sudan, South Sudan, as well as in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Since July 2011, East Africa has faced its worst drought in decades, leading to the most severe food crisis of the 21st century. Oxfam International's affiliates are now fully engaged in providing emergency assistance to those suffering from the crisis. Mr. Michael Delaney, director of Humanitarian Response for Oxfam America discusses the situation in the region.

All of our energy is focused on responding to the crisis in the Horn of Africa. There is a tremendous drought in some areas; it's a famine, where over 12-million people are affected and suffering at this very moment. And so we are on the ground in Ethiopia, in Somalia, in Kenya, helping people survive and also helping them become less vulnerable and have a more sustainable future.

So, where our work is happening, right now as we speak, we have our staff out in those countries. All of the energy around our communications and our policy changes are around and dedicated towards the people in the Horn of Africa. Last week in our camp in Ethiopia, we had 20,000 people there. We were preparing a camp for 60,000. Today there are 75,000 people in that camp. So you can see how quickly
